Malala Andrialavidrazana will present works from her recent series entitled ‘Figures’. While focusing on influential archives such as antique atlases, banknotes and popular album covers, the artist then customises these icons into compositions that are her personal representation of such. These images raise questions about the symbolic representation of cultural and political identities from different perspectives. After considering typical and identifying features, recognisable details from wide-spread clichés are combined in multiple layers. These layers are then reconsidered into historical narratives, along with their contradictions. The resulting photomontages offer an alternative global vision by converging numerous civilisations into imaginary worlds, regardless of any traditional conventions.
